Simonsig Wine Estate is founded, owned and managed by the Malan Family of Stellenbosch. Our family played a crucial role in the shaping of the modern wine industry in South Africa, from the establishment of the Stellenbosch Wine Route and the Wine of Origin System to the creation of the Cap Classique Association and Stellenbosch Cabernet Collective. Through our decades of experience and knowledge of our soul we aim to continue to create the joy that our wines bring to people.

Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Brut
Frans Malan, the founder of Simonsig, was the first producer of Méthode Cap Classique in South Africa, with the pioneering Kaapse Vonkel in 1971. Today Johan Malan, continues the legacy with the production of some of the most acclaimed and consistent MCC's in the country. The Kaapse Vonkel is a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with a miunte splash of Pinot Meunier.

Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Brut Rosé
In 2004 Simonsig winemaker, Johan Malan, first created an innovative taste sensation by blending mainly Pinot Noir, with Pinotage and Pinot Meunier, to launch the Kaapse Vonkel Brut Rosé, made in the traditional MCC style. The final composition of the Rosé is determined by meticulous tastings before the different cuvées are blended. The bottles are matured for at least 15 months on the lees, adding layers of yeasty complexity to the delicious red berry flavours.

Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Satin Nectar

Simonsig Cuvée Royale
For over 50 years, the Malan family of Simonsig has been synonymus with Méthode Cap Classique production in South Africa. In 1990 Johan Malan returned from a trip to Champagne with a dream to make a Prestige Cuvée from the finest and most delicate Chardonnay cuvées, capable of long evolution. The Cuvée Royale is made from 100% Chardonnay and aged of the lees for 3 years.

Simonsig Langbult Steen
Chenin Blanc is part of our DNA at Simonsig. The journey began with this iconic cultivar in 1968 when Chenin Blanc was the first wine bottled and labelled under the Simonsig brand. Years of experience in working with this cultivar have culminated into the Langbult Steen, previously known as Chenin avec Chêne. The single vineyard Langbult Steen (“long hill Chenin Blanc”), from which the wine takes its name, has been certified as an official heritage vineyard with old vine status as from the 2022 vintage, ushering in a new era for the wine.

Simonsig The Garland Cabernet Sauvignon
The slopes of Simonsberg mountain are famous for its superb terroir and ideal soils to grow world class Cabernet Sauvignon on the deep red hued weathered granite soils.The Malan family has a connection with these vineyards going back many generations and The Garland, a flagship single site Cabernet Sauvignon, is a wine that expresses this close relationship with the Simonsberg mountain, the vineyard and the family. 24 months maturation in new French oak.

Simonsig Merindol Syrah
The name Merindol is taken from the Malan Coat of Arms and is also the name of the French village from where the Malans originated. The premium Merindol vineyard, a selected single vineyard site, was planted in 1996 with a French Syrah clone. This premium quality Syrah, was oak matured for 17 months in 100% new French oak.

Simonsig Redhill Pinotage
Forming part of the Malan Family selection, The Redhill Pinotage comes from a site specific vineyard, grown on the famous red hills of Simonsig Estate. The red soil originates from decomposed weathered shale and is acclaimed for growing premium red grapes, due to the excellent moisture retention capacity and good drainage. This premium, robust Pinotage benefits from 16 months maturation in French oak and a small portion of American White Oak.

Simonsig Frans Malan
In 1991 Simonsig experimented with a Pinotage Cabernet blend for the Cape Winemakers Guild, showcasing a new approach in winemaking styles. This Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot blend later became a limited release wine. Named after Frans Malan, the founder of Simonsig and the patriarch of the Malan family. 15 Months in mainly French oak, with a portion of American White Oak.

Simonsig Tiara
Simonsig Wine Estate is synonymous with the Malan family, co-founding the Stellenbosch wine route and producing the first MCC in South Africa. Simonsig Vin de Liza Noble Late Harvest
In recent vintages, Simonsig has been making its Noble Late Harvest wine in a classic, slightly drier and more food friendly style, much like the famous French Sauternes wines. The Vin de Liza, is a deliciously sweet dessert wine, named after Johan Malan's mother, Liza. Made from a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon grapes, with the final blend spending 13 months in old French oak.

Simonsig Sunbird Sauvignon Blanc
Over the last few years new Sauvignon Blanc plantings were made on the coolest sites on the Simonsig Estate with the vineyards overlooking False Bay, a mere 20km away to the South. Meticulous attention to site, terroir and clonal selection, as well as optimal canopy management in the vineyard, consistently results in quality Sauvignon Blanc grapes packed with flavour.

Simonsig Jamala Gewürztraminer
First planted on the estate in 1973, Simonsig was the first cellar to release a Gewürztraminer in South Africa. A notoriously difficult variety to grow, with its small bunches and extremely low yield. Grapes from the older vineyard, contributed intense aromatic potential and structure, complimented by elegance and freshness from some of the estate's younger vines, resulting in a delicious semi-sweet wine, well suited to spicy food pairings.

Simonsig Needless To Say Rosé
This rosé showcases a colour of cotton candy sunset radiating from the glass. Its aromatic profile has wonderful aromas of strawberry sherbet, passion fruit and ripe pineapple with subtle notes of white blossoms. On the palate, a zesty tingle of acidity carries the fruit and with a light, creamy texture. It makes for a balanced, elegant wine for all occasions.

Simonsig Mr Borio's Shiraz
Simonsig Estate named its full-bodied Shiraz, Mr Borio's, in honour of Alessandro Borio's unparalleled masonry skills - he built the first cement wine tanks on Simonsig that are still in use today. Together with his eccentric, colourful personality, he found an inherent place at this Stellenbosch wine estate. This Shiraz was aged in a selection of French oak and American oak for 10 months.

Simonsig Pick of the Bunch Pinotage
The first red wine released by Simonsig in 1970 was a Pinotage - a cross of Pinot Noir and Cinsaut first developed by Professor Perold in 1925. Grapes are grown on weathered shale soils, which makes deliciously perfumed wine. It is lightly wooded, with only a small portion of the wine spending time in second- and third fill French oak, accentuating the raspberry fruitiness of the Pinotage grape.

Simonsig Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz

Simonsig The Grapesmith Die Kluisenaar
The Grapesmith, is Johan Malan from Simonsig's sideline project, consisting of two blended Rhône-style white wines. Die Kluisenaar, meaning 'The Hermit', is a blend of Roussanne and Marsanne, modelled on white Hermitage wines of the Rhône Valley, in France. The wine was fermented naturally in 225 litre French oak barrels and spent 12 months on the primary lees, with occasional battonage, resulting in a wine with beautiful body and texture.

Simonsig The Grapesmith Mediterraneo
A dry, white blend of Roussanne, Marsanne, Grenache Blanc and Clairette Blanche. These white grape varieties have distinguished themselves in the south of France and Spain, and have started to gain popularity in the Cape. The Grapesmith Mediterraneo utilises these varieties and their wonderful affinity for Cape's Mediterranean climate to create a gorgeous, juicy wine.

Simonsig The Grapesmith Maritimo
In 1488, Bartolomeu Dias became the first seafarer to round the southern tip of Africa, marking the beginning of an era for the brave “Maritimos” who forged the shipping route to the East. Nearly two centuries later, the first grapevines also arrived by ship to the fairest Cape. Maritimo is a wine guided by the compass rose of adventure and testament to the boldness of these explorers, symbolising the spirit of seafaring and the introduction of grapevines to South Africa. Maturation in neutral French oak and a concrete egg gives rise to this balanced, fresh and elegantly fruity red.
