De Grendel Wines

The Graaff family have played a defining role in the South African political, social and business landscape for over four generations. From his humble origins as a young farm boy, the vision and foresight of First Baronet Sir David Pieter de Villiers Graaff established the foundations of a family legacy that is carried forward by his great-grandson Baronet Sir De Villiers Graaff. The historic farm De Grendel, with its sweeping views across Table Bay towards Table Mountain, is home to a family lineage that continues from generation to generation.

The Graaffs saw the potential of grape growing high up on the Witzenberg Mountain range in Ceres. At an altitude of 960 meters above sea level, this unique terroir exhibits South Africa’s only truly continental climate, well suited to growing Chardonnay, allowing for slower ripening and concentrated fruit. This vintage of Op die Berg Chardonnay, together with the Op die Berg Pinot Noir are the first wines from the newly-created Ceres Plateau appellation.

De Grendel Rubaiyat
The Rubaiyat was named after Omar Khayyam’s exquisite collection of 1000 Persian love poems from the 10th century, held dear by the late De Grendel owner Sir David Graaff. This flagship wine was first made in 2006 when cellar master Charles Hopkins was asked to make an ‘iconic’ wine for the estate. Successive vintages feature a different quatrain from the poem on the label, hence a blend of four varietals. Half of the blend comprises Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by Petit Verdot, Merlot and a tiny portion of Cabernet Franc.
